Sponsored Bike Ride: July 2023
On 16 July, young people from schools across Lewes came together for a sponsored cycle ride to celebrate sustainability, collaboration and community action. Setting off from the Linklater Pavilion, riders travelled to Iford and back, raising £250 for Dr Bike — a local initiative that promotes cycling in Lewes by helping people maintain and repair their bikes.
At the halfway point in Iford, participants paused not only to rest, but to exchange ideas for making their schools more sustainable. From practical changes to ambitious new projects, these student-led suggestions have since been collated and will be presented to the Green United Youth Board at their September meeting — ensuring the momentum continues.
The event was made possible thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers and local organisations. Cycle Lewes and Dr Bike volunteers ensured riders’ safety and provided clear route guidance throughout the day. The Egrets Way team generously offered refreshments, Iford Estate kindly granted access to their community hall, and the Railway Land Wildlife Trust allowed use of the Linklater Pavilion undercroft as a base for the ride.
The day was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when young people, schools and community partners work together toward a shared goal.
