Influencing Curriculum: July 2023

Recognising that environmentally friendly living and climate change were not receiving enough attention in the school curriculum, Green United partnered with researchers from the University of Sussex to explore the issue.

In July 2022, Dr Michael Jonik, Dr Perpetua Kirby, Dr John Parry and Dr Rebecca Webb worked with teachers and pupils from Southover Primary School, Priory Secondary School and Lewes Old Grammar School, as well as several Brighton-based teachers and university researchers. The project aimed to identify how climate change and sustainable living could be better integrated into teaching and learning across primary and secondary schools.

The exploratory research was completed on 5 October 2022, and the findings were published online in July 2023, providing valuable insights for schools, educators and policymakers seeking to strengthen environmental education.

This work was supported by the University of Sussex’s Covid Recovery for Sustainable Futures programme, with contributions from researchers across the School of Music, Arts and Humanities and the School of Education and Social Work.
